This mission-style built-in was crafted from plain-sawn red oak to complement a 60–70-year-old mantel in a Victorian Pittsburgh home. Spanning more than eight feet, it was precisely fitted to a floor that rises nearly an inch from one end to the other—while maintaining seamless contact throughout. Built in four sections for transport and installation, it features adjustable shelving, concealed wall anchors, relocated code-compliant electrical outlets, and a custom diagonal ledge that prevents objects from falling behind the unit near the staircase. Every joint was carefully fitted with zero caulk and no visible fasteners. Beyond providing much-needed, child-safe book storage, this project marked the first commission completed after reopening Stevens Works in Wood.
